What is the Excel Academy?

The Excel Academy is a division of the Excel Society that is dedicated to enabling people to develop their full potential. Excel Society offers residential and community services to individuals requiring assistance to live in the community. Divisions under the Excel Society include Kedros Furniture Inc., a multi-faceted manufacturing facility that offers vocational training for persons with developmental disabilities; Kedros Furniture Store (3925 - 99 Street) where cedar patio furniture, children's / daycare furniture, massage tables and mats, and custom furniture can be purchased; and the Excel Academy.

The Excel Academy was founded to respond to the growing need for qualified and professional staff needed to support persons with physical and mental disabilities. Our courses are designed to provide students / participants with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to meet the expectations and challenges in a rewarding career as a Community Support Worker.

The Excel Academy offers a 17 week Community Support Worker three times a year, professional development training for human services and in-house training for the 450 + staff of the Excel Society.

The Excel Academy is a private vocational school licensed under the Private Vocational Schools Act of Alberta and is a member of the Alberta Association of Career Colleges.


What Courses are Offered through the Excel Academy Community Support Worker certificate program?

Current training courses are selected to complement agency standards for quality service and professionalism.

Training is provided in Abuse Prevention; Lifting and Transferring, Body Mechanics, Positioning; Conflict Resolution; Documentation; Individual Service Planning; Medication Administration; Standard First Aid & CPR; Strategies for Behaviour Management; Suicide Intervention; Teaching Sexuality to the Developmentally Disabled; Non Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention® Training Programs; WHMIS; and many more. Courses are offered 5 days a week during day hours (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) Proctored exams are held most days after course instruction. There may be variation in course times but advanced notice will be given, should this occur. Courses range in length from 1/2 day to 2 or 3 days and are constantly updated to reflect the latest information relevant to the instruction. Practicum times may vary. Instruction is not taught on weekends, evenings or statutory holidays. There is a one hour lunch period, unless indicated by the instructor.


How do I register for the Community Support Worker certificate program?

Fill out the registration form and forward it via fax, mail or in person to the following address along with a non-refundable registration fee of $125.00 to cover administrative processing costs:

Upon the Academy receiving the application, you will be contacted to come into the Academy to complete an entrance exam and interview. When a student successfully passes the entrance exam and interview, the following criteria must be provided to the Academy:

Standard Admission

Original Grade 12 high school transcript of grades, or equivalent of proof of completion of GED.
Statement of health from a physician indicating fitness suitability for training.
A security clearance check (applicants will complete clearance forms at the Academy and the Academy will forward forms for clearance).

Mature Admission

Original transcript of last high school level studies and ESL competency certificate if majority of studies done in language other than English.
Statement of health from a physician indicating fitness suitability for training.
A security clearance check (applicants will complete clearance forms at the Academy and the Academy will forward forms for clearance).

Who are the Instructors at the Excel Academy?

The Excel Academy has a team of dynamic, highly qualified instructors. Their experience, combined with advanced, high quality training materials developed from the latest resources, ensures that the Excel Academy instruction is of the highest quality. Contracted instructors are also added to the instructional mix to ensure for a variety of teaching styles.


Where is the Excel Academy located?

The Excel Academy is located 10766 97 Street, Edmonton, AB. Some classes may be held in other locations but locations will be identified in advance. Students will be placed in practicums at a variety of locations.


What are the tuition fees for the Community Support Worker certificate program?

The Excel Academy strives to offer the Community Support Worker certificate program at the most reasonable rates it can for its quality instruction. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $125.00 upon registration to cover administrative costs including a security check of our students. The tuition fee for the Community Support certificate program is $2175.00 (the registration fee is included in this amount) and there is a book and materials fee of $75.00. Upon acceptance to the Community Support Worker certificate program, all instructional fees must be paid by course intake commencement date.


What are my prospects for Employment upon graduation from the Community Support Worker certificate program?

The program includes an employment preparation component. Immediate employment after graduation is expected. There is currently an acute shortage of trained Community Support Workers in Edmonton and throughout Alberta. The field of personal and in-home human services is growing and demand for qualified workers is high.


How many times a year does the Community Support Worker certificate program run?

There are three Community Support Worker certificate program intakes a year - a winter, spring and fall session. The length of each program is approximately 17 weeks.


What if I have already obtained certificates for some of the courses in the curriculum?

Some students may have previous educational experience in good standing. (eg. First Aid certification) that can be applied to the program for credit. Students must provide transcript and certification of demonstrated learning that has a passing grade acceptable to the Excel Academy standards and has current certification dates. If certification date becomes invalid during course schedule or 6 months after course program, student will be required to take the certification course during program schedule. Excel Academy credit value will be applied toward approved recognized certification and student will be exempted from that course but no monetary tuition fee will be returned for recognition.


How do I pay for the program upon registration?

The Excel Academy accepts program payment via cash, money orders, certified cheques, Visa or Mastercard. Students may be eligible for student finance loans. Contact the Excel Academy Administrative Assistant for details on the process required to obtain student financing.
